Vigilance
Carolyn Wren

November 10 - 26, 2006
Opening Reception: Friday, Nov 10th, 7:30 - 10:00 PM

Carolyn Wren has been investigating the history, language, and artistry of maps for 5 years. Her inquiry has led her to conflate the symbols of cartography and the body as it relates to personal and political identity. Wren’s Vigilance is an installation of six coats made of industrial grey felt. Maps of the border regions between Canada and the U.S. are printed in black on the pattern pieces of each jacket. The distinguishing cartographic feature of these map fragments is the elimination of the border between the two countries.

Neutral in terms of the implications of combining Canada and the United States, Vigilance invokes a questioning of a borderless society on sociological, economic, and political grounds. These bodiless jackets stand like sentinels, conjuring memories of walls dividing and defending historical borders, as well as the recent politics of protecting the boundary between Canada and the U.S. against terrorism.

Wren uses relief print methods and processes in non-traditional ways to create installations. She has been exhibiting her work since 1990 in group and solo shows across Ontario in public galleries and artist-run centres, most recently in Toronto this September at Open Studio. This group show, “Informal Bookworks”, is curated by Penelope Stewart and will travel to the University of Buffalo in November.
