Melanie MacDonald
chachka

September 8 - 21, 2006
Opening Reception*: Friday, Sept 8th, 7 - 10 pm

Like the wood rat, Melanie MacDonald has been collecting, arranging, and recording trinkets, gadgets, chachkas and precious items for over 5 years. In her new painting installation, MacDonald reflects not only on our consumer society and daily life, but also on our need to contain and classify our cultural interests and tastes. We are obsessed with excess. Collections reflect more about the collector than about the objects, and in a world of flea markets, garage sales, auctions and church bazaars, MacDonald puts the hand of the crafter back into these mass produced objects that complement our lives.

Melanie was born in St. Catharines, Ontario in 1976. She is an active member of the Niagara Artists' Company and CRAM, and she graduated from Brock University with a combined Honours BA in English and Visual Art. An emerging artist of growing stature, she has participated in group and solo exhibitions in the Niagara Region, Northern Ontario, Toronto, Quebec and Western New York. Mel has most recently been an exhibitor in the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition and will be showing at the upcoming Queen West Art Crawl, September 16 - 17 at Trinity Bellwoods Park. MacDonald's work is highly sought after in Niagara and is in private collections in Canada and the U.S.
